Already two of the giants - AX Armani Exchange Milan and CSKa Moscow- displayed an all-out intensity on every play, even from the first game of the season.
Round 1: Perfect starts from the home teams
The 2021-22 regular season begun with the home teams waxing strong with a 4-0 win ratio during their first opening matches of the season. It would appear that the advantage of playing in familiar grounds returns after last year’s lack of spectators. Let’s take a look at the teams participating this year in alphabetical order:
Alba Berlin
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
AS Monaco
AX Armani Exchange Milan
Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz
Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade
CSKA Moscow
FC Barcelona
FC Bayern Munich
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul
LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne
Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv
Olympiacos Piraeus
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens
Real Madrid
UNICS Kazan
Zalgiris Kaunas
Zenit St Petersburg
Khimki Moscow Region and Valencia have been replaced by the newcomers AS Monaco and the returning UNICS Kazan. So we have 2 unknown factors for this year’s equation.
The usual suspects
It would be fair to say that Real Madrid, CSKA Moscow, Anadolu Efes and Fenerbahce still present themselves as the main candidates for the final four. However, this year we seem to have a much stronger opposition. Maccabi has a completely new team, FC Bayern will be a tough nut to crack and we have an Olympiacos Piraeus which is also an unknown factor as the legend of Vasilis Spanoulis has retired from active duty and it will be interesting to see how his team will fair without his leadership and scoring capabilities.
Panathinaikos OPAP is also a completely new team with a new coach and not expected to play any significant part. Zenit, Zalgiris, Alba, Baskonia and Barcelona will probably set the pace and determine which team will advance to the next round and which one will try their luck again next year.
As the competition progresses, we will be recapping what goes on so that you can have a clear picture of the situation. You will need of course to stay tuned to our news section.
