“Messi wishes to pursue in Barcelona” stated the Blaugrana president Joan Laporta this Monday.
According to the Catalan daily sports news, the air of certainty by the clubs’ boss for the ongoing negotiations between the club and the Argentinian, has been based on the fact that an agreement had already been reached between the two parties. The terms stipulate a new 5-year contract, i.e., till 2026 and Pulga’s 39th birthday, along with a 50% reduction in wages, marking a huge decrease from the amounts of the previous contracts.
The formalization is for later
Forced by the Spanish Football League to a strict salary cap, Barça is not yet able to formalize this new contract. Joan Laporta does not hide the need for the Blaugrana to cut down on the total costs beforehand. Which comes as a rather difficult task considering the caliber of the players in the roster (Piqué, Busquets, Alba, Roberto). A task that is even more difficult considering the active contracts of Samuel Umtiti, Miralem Pjanic and Martin Braithwaite. As for Phillipe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann, according to SPORTS, Barcelona might keep them if they agree to a reduction in their salaries.
Messi for a 7th upcoming Ballon d’or?
Presently enjoying his holiday in Ibiza with his family, Messi came to Barcelona in 2000. Since then:
- 4 times winner of the Champions League
- 10 times Spanish champion
- 7 times holder of Copa del Rey
- and finally holder of the major trophy of Copa América, which he won inside the Maracanã stadium against Neymar Jr’s Brazil.
An achievement that could very well earn him a seventh Golden Ball at the end of the year.
The “leaks” to the press, gave early August as the time frame for the public announcement of the agreement between Messi and the club. While it will not be so, the formalization is just a matter of time. One of the main goals of LaPorta since his first day in office was brought to success, assuring the club fans that even better days are in store for the future. Whatever that future is, you will read about it here in our news section, so stay tuned.
