2019 Vuelta a España

2019 Vuelta a España

Grand Tours are three major European professional cycling stage races: Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España. All these three races are similar in format being three-week races with daily stages. Also, they are the only stage races allowed to last longer than 14 days.

2019 Vuelta a España is a Grand Tour cycling stage race that is scheduled to take place in Spain, Andorra, and France from 24 August to 15 September 2019. The three-week race will be the 74th event of the Vuelta a España and will be the final Grand Tour of the 2019 cycling season. The 18 UCI World Teams are automatically invited to the race. In addition, four Professional Continental teams obtained a wildcard, bringing the number of teams to 22. Ahead of the tournament, the favorites are Steven Kruijswijk, Primož Roglič (Team Jumbo-Visma), Miguel Ángel López, Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team). Also, Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) are considered as potential stage winners and points classification contenders.

Well known for its testing parkours and plethora of summit finishes, the Vuelta represents an immense challenge. Several players have tried and failed to win it in the same season as another Grand Tour. There is a total of 21 parkours which makes a total of 3,272.2 km (2,033.3 mi). The longest part of these parkours is being the distance from Aranda de Duero to Guadalajara have 199.7 km (124.1 mi), but since it is a flat stage it wouldn’t be so hard to finish. Being one of the key parkours with 94.4 km (60.0 mi), Andorra la Vella - Cortals d'Encamp is the first parkour which brings the race above 2,000 meters for the first time. The climbing for this parkour begins immediately on leaving the start in Andorra.
